Anti Theft Copper Wire Light Base

Copper wire theft from DOT freeway light bases and signals costs DOTs thousands of dollars per incident, and it's happening more often as copper prices rise. Rodent Barriers LLC developed the Anti-Theft Copper Wire Device to give state DOTs and installation crews a simple, permanent solution. Designed for DOT bases, it uses tamper-proof stainless steel and aluminum hardware to lock thieves out while allowing full access to DOT employees and installers. It also doubles as a rodent intrusion barrier, so you're solving two problems with one install. Patent applied for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this actually stop copper wire theft from our DOT bases?

Our device is designed to virtually eliminate copper wire theft from DOT lighting and signal bases. It uses tamper-proof stainless-steel hardware that cannot be removed without a specialized tool, which is only provided to the DOT maintenance and installation crews. Thieves move on when they realize the sheer difficulty of breaching our copper wire anti-theft device.

Does it come with any theft deterrent signage?

Yes. Each unit includes a "Warning" plaque that mounts on the outside of the base, notifying would-be thieves that they won't be getting inside. Visible deterrents reduce attempts before they even start. Once the thieves know the extreme difficulty of breaching our anti-theft device, they will pass up all bases that have our warning plaque on the door.

How common is copper wire theft from roadside light bases?

It's a serious and growing problem for DOTs across the nation. Copper prices have made roadside infrastructure a target. Thieves can strip a base in minutes, leaving behind damaged wiring, outages, and repair bills that run into the hundreds of thousands. Some districts report losing the same bases multiple times in a single season.

How much does copper wire theft typically cost a DOT?

Beyond the value of the copper itself, DOTs absorb the cost of emergency repairs, crew dispatch, replacement wiring, and traffic control. A single theft incident can easily run $3,000 to $7,000 or more when labor and materials are factored in, and repeat thefts at the same location multiply that quickly.

What bases is this device compatible with?

The current model is designed for the TB1-17 breakaway base. TB2 and TB3 versions are in development and coming soon. If you have a different base type that has been susceptible to wire theft, reach out to us directly. We can manufacture an anti-theft device for nearly any application. We can design and manufacture custom sizes and will work with your existing infrastructure.

Is it hard to install? Do we need to modify existing bases?

No modifications needed. The device is designed for simple installation on both new and existing bases. Maintenance and installation crews can install without specialized equipment. All they need is the included special tamper proof hardware tool. Extra tools are available and will only be provided to confirmed DOTs and certified DOT installers.

How do our maintenance crews access the wiring after it's installed?

Each device ships with the specific tool required for access. Your DOT personnel keep the tool, and thieves don't have it. Access for legitimate maintenance is straightforward, while access for theft is effectively blocked.

What materials are used? Will it hold up outdoors?

All components are corrosion-proof stainless steel and aluminum, built for the same conditions your roadside infrastructure already handles, including road salt, temperature swings, and year-round weather exposure. There is no plastic hardware to crack or corrode over time.

Does it do anything besides prevent theft?

Yes. In most anti-theft applications, the device also functions as a rodent intrusion barrier, keeping rodents out of the base and away from your wiring. That's two common maintenance headaches addressed with one product and one installation.

Is this patented?

All Rodent Barriers LLC products are Patented or are Patent pending. This is a purpose-built solution, not just a generic lock or obstruction for thieves.
